A History of Bean Bag Chairs
When were bean bag chairs invented?
The first bean bag chair was created in 1968 by three Italian designers named Piero Gatti, Cesare Paolini and Franco Teodoro. The trio had a difficult time, they failed several times before settling on their final design. Which goes to show you that you shouldn't give up.
Gatti, Paolini, and Teodoro were inspired by the trend of modernist design prevalent in Europe at the time. Within a few months the "bean bag" was popular as a gift item and then it penetrated the American market, especially with college students who wanted them for their dorm rooms.
We've come a long way since the first bean bag chairs. Foam is the preferred filler for "bean bag style" furniture. Foam is more resilient, more consistent, and more comfortable. Foam also doesn't spill all over the floor.
